INNER CHILD HEALING THERAPY ONLINE
Inner Child Healing Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on assisting individuals in healing from childhood trauma and cultivating a positive relationship with their Inner Child.
The term “Inner Child” has become popular in Psychotherapy and some spiritual practices. More popular with abused children or children who have experienced neglect, lack of love, support, validation, abandonment, rejection, attachment issues, relational issues, and so on. Inner Child work is a powerful tool for releasing hidden agendas, deep emotional trauma or wounds, distress, and other issues that, if not addressed, can lead to lifelong unhappiness.
Within us is an Inner Child, the accumulation of all our learning and experiences before puberty. The Inner Child is our emotional self, where we have our feelings. The Inner Child not only holds unresolved emotions such as sadness, hurts, pain, traumas, neglect, and abandonment, to name a few, but also joy, spontaneity, fun, insight, delight, aliveness, and connection to one’s true self or divine source. Forming a long-lasting, healthy relationship with your Inner Child is an empowering step forward towards living a more authentic, blissful, and meaningful life.
The Child within is a delightful, spontaneous, mischievous, and sparkling part of our personality if the adult had a healthy and normal childhood. The Child Within is subordinate to the adult personality and is under the control of the adult will.
However, if there is childhood trauma, the spontaneous part of us becomes “damaged.” When triggered by a situation similar to the past, the Child within will override the adult will and act out, resulting in tantrums and inappropriate behaviour in adult situations.
Inner Child Therapy uses various techniques to help individuals heal from childhood trauma, develop a healthy relationship with their Inner Child and explore their feelings and experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
Inner Child Therapy can involve various techniques and approaches, depending on the therapist’s and the individual’s needs. Some standard methods used in Inner Child Therapy include guided visualization, role-playing, journaling, creative expression, and Inner Child dialogues, for example.
Finding a qualified and experienced therapist specialising in Inner Child Therapy is essential to ensure you receive the best care. Your therapist must ensure you feel safe and supported throughout the process and help you manage potential risks or challenges.
While Inner Child Therapy can be a powerful tool for healing, it’s important to note that it can also be challenging and emotionally intense at times, as it involves exploring and processing deep emotional wounds. However, with the guidance of a skilled therapist and a willingness to engage in the process, individuals can experience profound healing and transformation.
Many individuals have experienced positive results from Inner Child Therapy. By developing a healthy relationship with their Inner Child, they recover from childhood trauma, build more beneficial relationships with themselves and others, and live more fulfilling and meaningful lives.

HOW WILL INNER CHILD THERAPY HELP ME?
In recent years, Inner Child work has been shown to be beneficial in treating people who have experienced childhood trauma, including sexual, physical, mental and emotional abuse, abandonment and neglect. It is especially true of those who used disassociation in one form or another to cope with the trauma.
Assume you suffered from long-term neglect, abandonment, abuse or other deeply traumatic experiences as a child. Deeply ingrained feelings of confusion, lack of love, instability, and self-loathing, to name a few, cause one to become trapped in the past dynamics experienced as a child. As there was no one to show a better way of being, one learns to survive these deeply painful experiences, and some part of you moved on.
Assume you were a child who experienced long periods of neglect, abandonment, abuse, confusion, a lack of love, instability, and self-loathing, to name a few or other deeply traumatic experiences. These experiences become entangled in the dynamics of childhood.
Because the child has not fully developed mentally or emotionally, the part that experienced those feelings/trauma remains trapped at that point in time, unable to process the experience or feelings. The unconscious mind will do what it always does and ‘cuts off that part’ that experienced this so that the rest of you can survive and function. With more severe trauma, a more complex scenario may include feelings of dissociation. You learned to survive these deeply painful experiences because there was no one to show you a better way to be or heal, and the rest of you moved on, leaving that part of your child stuck or trapped in that experience(s).
Despite survival being a necessary and protective aspect of our experience, these trapped emotions continue to rise to the surface for Healing and integration, allowing them to become a part of you now. Unfortunately, no one is taught how to do this safely, primarily if one or both of your parents are unable to support you. As a result, reliving the same turmoil continuously negatively impacts one’s life. This is often experienced as ‘being triggered!’
Inner Child Therapy can help people understand their feelings of guilt and shame, reducing nightmares, flashbacks, and panic attacks. It is commonly used to treat self-harm issues, eating disorders, severe PTSD, and prolonged periods of distress or trauma during childhood. You do not need to have experienced significant trauma to benefit from Inner Child work.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN INNER CHILD HEALING THERAPY SESSION?
Inner Child Healing therapy sessions are beneficial for people who want to explore and address one or more specific childhood issues they wish to explore through structured therapy sessions, with the focus being on Healing the Inner Child.
The first consultation (1 hour) is an initial assessment to determine if the therapist fits you. During this session, the therapist evaluates their skills and expertise to address your specific needs. If the therapist feels that another professional may be better suited to assist you, they will provide appropriate referrals.
Additionally, the consultation allows the therapist to gather essential information about the reasons for seeking therapy, your history related to the issues, any pertinent medical information, and other relevant details. During this session, the Therapist will discuss your goals, outcomes, length and frequency of sessions and whether therapy is likely to be short or long-term.
Finally, the consultation is an opportunity for both the client and the therapist to assess if they are a good fit and can form a therapeutic relationship for deeper work.
To fully access the root cause, Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy Regression techniques or working with the unconscious, such as working with the body or highly charged emotions, may be used safely to avoid re-traumatising the client. It is a progressive and interactive journey in which the client gently accesses and embraces these younger parts, allowing them to be heard, healed, and eventually integrated. It may also include self-care techniques between sessions to help the client rebuild a healthy relationship with the Inner Child and oneself.
During Inner Child therapy, the therapist may also help individuals identify and challenge negative beliefs or patterns of behaviour that developed due to childhood trauma. By addressing these patterns and beliefs, individuals can create new, healthier ways of thinking and behaving that support their emotional well-being and personal growth.
As each person is unique, how we approach and work with the Inner Child will differ for each person. However, as the journey unfolds, you will gain the information and tools you need for your Inner Child Healing.
The length of Inner Child Healing therapy depends on what you are working through and how long you have dealt with these issues. Isolated trauma incidents, for example, will be resolved much faster (in a few sessions) than long-term neglect and abuse, which may require months or years of therapy and depends on how frequently you have treatment, such as once a week or every two weeks. Inner child Healing sessions can be 1 hour, 1.5 hours or 2 hours.
POTENTIAL RISKS OF INNER CHILD THERAPY:
While Inner Child therapy can be a powerful tool for healing, it can also bring up intense emotions and memories that can be difficult to process. It’s important for individuals to be aware of these potential challenges and to work with a qualified therapist who can help them manage and navigate them.
- Emotional intensity: Inner Child therapy can bring up intense emotions and memories that can be difficult to process. This can be challenging for some individuals, especially those who have experienced significant trauma or have difficulty regulating their emotions.
- Re-traumatization: In some cases, Inner Child therapy can inadvertently trigger or re-traumatize individuals who have experienced past trauma. It’s important for therapists to be aware of this risk and to work with clients to develop coping strategies and techniques to manage intense emotions.
- Resistance: Some individuals may initially resist the process of Inner Child therapy, either because they are not ready to confront their past or because they have developed coping mechanisms that protect them from painful emotions. A skilled therapist can help clients work through resistance and gently guide them towards deeper healing.
- Dependence: In some cases, individuals may become overly dependent on their therapist or the therapy process. This can be problematic if it prevents individuals from developing their own coping skills and strategies outside of therapy.
It’s important to note that while these risks and challenges are possible, they can be managed and navigated with the support of a skilled and experienced therapist. By working with a qualified therapist and being open to the process, individuals can experience profound healing and transformation through Inner Child therapy.
INNER CHILD HEALING THERAPY WITH ME:
To become a UKCP-accredited Psychotherapist, I had to go through therapy myself to understand what it was like to be a client. After beginning treatment, I discovered I could not move past specific childhood experiences despite various psychotherapy forms.
In 2012, I realised that what I required was not readily available and needed to provide the tools to heal aspects of my unresolved inner child wounds. At this point, I created and developed my own Inner Child Healing Therapy programme, which enabled me to resolve issues I had previously been unable to resolve with a therapist. As a result, despite not actively advertising Inner Child Healing Therapy, more and more clients came to me for ‘inner child healing’. Since then, I have been using these techniques with clients. My clients experienced equally phenomenal shifts over the years. Most of them have been unable to make the level of progress they did with other forms of therapy.
I drew on my psychotherapeutic training and my own inner experiences and combined them. I am sure some of these techniques may be out there already and overlap with those of other specialised professionals. However, these are entirely based on my personal experiences. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of sharing these with others on the Healing journey.
As with Psychotherapy or Hypnotherapy, you will enter into a therapeutic agreement with the therapist, focusing on solution-focused outcomes and goals.
MY PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC APPROACH:
My approach to therapy is holistic, transformative, and multidimensional, incorporating integrative and psychodynamic elements. I believe in outcome-focused psychotherapy, which emphasises setting specific goals for treatment and regularly monitoring progress towards those goals. This approach involves collaborating with clients to understand their hopes and develop a plan to achieve those goals, using various techniques and interventions to assist them while focusing on achieving specific outcomes.
In addition, I integrate elements from different schools of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioural, humanistic, and psychodynamic approaches, to address the emotional, behavioural, and cognitive aspects of my clients’ needs. This integrative approach provides a comprehensive and flexible framework that can be adapted to each client’s unique circumstances and preferences, allowing for a more personalised and effective therapeutic experience.
Furthermore, I also incorporate psychodynamic principles into my practice, which focuses on exploring the unconscious mind and its influence on a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. This approach, rooted in the theories of Sigmund Freud, emphasises the role of early childhood experiences and the dynamics of interpersonal relationships in shaping an individual’s psychological functioning. By bringing unconscious conflicts and patterns to the surface, psychodynamic therapy aims to promote greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of the underlying factors contributing to the client’s difficulties.
My holistic, transformative, and multidimensional approach to therapy integrates outcome-focused, integrative, and psychodynamic elements, among other elements, to provide clients with a comprehensive and personalised therapeutic experience aimed at achieving positive and lasting change.
